Combustible
Gas Detector
Model 8059 |
| Description |
 |
Matheson's Model 8059
Combustible Gas Detector is a rugged, portable instrument
designed for monitoring combustible gas levels in ambient air.
Weighing just 5.3 ounces, this compact unit is small enough to
fit into a shirt pocket, or it can conveniently be worn on the
belt. A two-stage audible and visual alarm provides early
warning of potentially explosive conditions. |
| The Model
8059 continuously samples the air by diffusion for combustible
gases and vapors. Calibrated on methane, the unit sounds a
pulsating audible alarm with flashing LED at 10% of the Lower
Explosive Limit (LEL), and a continuous audible alarm with
steady LED at 25% LEL. The Model 8059 also provides 1st and
2nd-stage alarms for hydrogen (10% and 30% LEL), propane (15%
and 40% LEL) and ethylene (15% and 40% LEL). |
| Gases
Detected |
| Although calibrated on
methane, the Model 8059 will detect virtually any combustible
gas. The levels at which the alarms will activate depends upon
the Lower Explosive Limit for the particular gas being detected.
The Model 8059 has been shown to automatically activate 1st and
2nd stage alarms for the following gases. |

| Principle
of Operation |
 |
The Model 8059 utilizes
an explosion-proof catalytic combustion type sensor, with
intrinsically safe electronic circuitry. The sensor consists of
a coiled platinum filament coated with a platinum catalyst. When
a combustible gas or vapor contacts the sensor, the gas is
oxidized and the temperature of the platinum coil increases.
This results in a proportional change in the resistance of the
platinum filament. Gas concentration is then measured as a
voltage change in a wheatstone bridge circuit. The circuit also
utilizes a temperature compensation element to correct for
ambient temperature changes. |
