Oxygen Deficiency Monitors
Model 8060, Model 8061

Description
Matheson's Oxygen Deficiency Monitors are compact, portable instruments designed for the continuous monitoring of ambient oxygen levels. A large LCD digital readout clearly displays the oxygen concentration at all times. A pulsating audible alarm sounds when the level falls below 19.5 percent.
Two versions are available. The Model 8061 is equipped with a 16 foot cable on a spool connecting the instrument to the sensor, making it ideal for testing manholes, tanks, bilges, silos, etc. The Model 8060 has the sensor at the end of an extendable 3 foot coiled cable. In both models, the sensor attaches easily to the top of the instrument for hands-free use.
Both the Model 8060 and 8061 can be used to test the oxygen level in a confined area prior to entering, or, conveniently worn on the belt or over the shoulder (both belt loop and shoulder strap are provided), they serve as a personal monitor anywhere the danger of oxygen deficiency exists.

Principle of Operation
The sensor is a small, leakproof galvanic cell that plugs into a rugged protective holder. The galvanic cell consists of a noble metal electrode, a base metal electrode, and an electrolyte in aqueous solution. A specially designed diaphragm membrane prevents the evaporation of water from the cell, providing for a long sensor lifetime and eliminating the need to periodically replenish the water.
A potential difference exists between the two electrodes. In the presence of oxygen, current flows from the noble metal electrode to the base metal electrode:
Noble metal: O2 + 2H2O + 4e- 4OH-
Base Metal: 2Pb 2Pb ++ + 4e-
The output of the cell is proportional to the oxygen concentration, with a virtually linear relationship through the entire range of the instrument.
Also, since the current generated in a galvanic cell is affected by temperature, a thermistor is utilized to compensate for ambient temperature changes.
